President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the voters register.

The President stated that the demands made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the voters register have been shelved, citing a lack of substance in their claims.

In an interview with France24, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the recent public broadcast by the Electoral Commission (EC), which he believes exposed the baseless nature of the opposition’s allegations.

“The other day the EC chose to broadcast publicly its deliberations on these issues, and I think the whole country came to realise that in fact there was no substance in the claims that the opposition was making,” he said.

He further noted that the NDC has now agreed to follow the EC’s outlined programme, implicitly acknowledging the futility of their previous demands.

“They had now gone ahead to say that they will abide by the programme that the EC has laid out. I think that that means implicitly that the demands that they were making have been shelved and they have to be shelved because there is no substance to it,” President Akufo-Addo added.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday October 1 accepted the Electoral Commission’s (EC) promise to release the updated 2024 Provisional Voters Register to all political parties for scrutiny within one week.

This development follows the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Tuesday, October 1, where the NDC pushed for a forensic audit of the voter register.

The NDC also welcomed the EC’s decision to re-exhibit the updated Provisional Voters’ Register.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC recommended conducting the re-exhibition exercise both online and offline at exhibition centres.
