The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious-Ghana (CMSR-GH), has announced an Environmental Prayer Walk Against Galamsey, scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024.
The event will commence at 10 a.m. from the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka, and conclude at Christ the King Parish, Cantonment.
This initiative aims to demonstrate the Church’s commitment to addressing the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities, known locally as “galamsey.”
The walk will feature the recitation of the Rosary, symbolising the Church’s spiritual battle against environmental destruction.
Participants will gather at the Holy Spirit Cathedral and proceed through the principal streets of Accra, culminating in a Holy Mass at Christ the King Grotto. A petition will also be presented to the Presidency at Jubilee House, urging government action against galamsey.
The Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra in a statement issued on Friday called on all priests to announce the event in their churches and encourage parishioners to participate. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in safeguarding the environment.
The Archbishop also requested logistical support from parish priests, including transportation and water for participants. The Knights of St. John International, Ladies Auxiliary, and the Knights and Ladies of Marshall are expected to assist in maintaining order during the event.
The Archdiocese hopes that this prayer walk will inspire greater environmental stewardship and prompt decisive action against illegal mining activities in Ghana.
