The pressure group, Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, has announced its intention to petition the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as well as Parliament, regarding the illegal mining (galamsey) menace.

The group aims to highlight the destructive impact of galamsey on Ghana’s natural resources and demand immediate action.

Earlier today, Thursday, October 3, a mammoth of protestors gathered and marched from Okponglo through some principal streets of Accra to the Accra Sports Stadium.

This is day one of the three-day protest against galamsey.

The convenor of the group, Brownson Adatti in an interview on the Eyewitness News on Citi FM described the first day as a success and noted that they will petition the ministry of lands and parliament.

“We will be meeting at the same point again and we will be marching to the Accra Sports stadium tomorrow just to stress the severity of the problem that is confronting us. We will be petitioning the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources tomorrow and on Saturday we will be doing the same thing, but the termination point will be the independence square. That night, there would be a vigil, and we will be petitioning parliament as well,” he stated.

He stressed that the protests are not merely symbolic but represent a desperate call for action to address the devastating effects of illegal mining on the environment and future generations.

“I want people to understand that this is not just another protest to just put our voices out there or just to march but it is a desperate cry for survival. We have been chopped by the devastating effects of illegal mining. Galamsey is not just illegal mining, but it is a deliberate attempt to destroy our resources, our water, lands and our future by just a selected few.”

“So, we all need to come together. This is because the problem is not discriminatory; it does not accept some people and leave others. we are all Ghanaians and that is why some of us will have to sacrifice our work today to be on the street to fight against galamsey and the disruption of our democracy,” he stated.
