Some members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have hit the streets in demand for payment of their tier 2 arrears.

There has been significant gridlock from Kwame Nkrumah Circle towards the ministries as the teachers drawn from across the nation are participating in the demonstrations.

The Head of Salaries, GNAT, Isaac Baah, told Channel One News that their action was to drum home their demands.

“For the past two years, there have been so many issues that have affected us. One, recently we signed our collective agreement, somewhere in May. We still have some outstanding issues that have not been fulfilled yet. As we speak, our tier 2 pension deduction is in arrears for 13 good months. Teachers are retiring, some are dying, and their money has not been paid to them.

“This is why we are on the streets. We have over 5,000 teachers who are facing salary reactivations. Through no fault of theirs, their salaries went off the payroll and some for 12 months, some for 8 months, some for 7 months, the GES has not been able to restore their salaries for them and they are still in school. This is why we are here.”
