The Board of the National Cathedral of Ghana has announced that preparations are underway to resume construction of the project following the submission of an audit report by Deloitte Ghana.
The audit, which examined the financial records of the National Cathedral of Ghana (NCG), confirmed that the Secretariat maintained accurate and transparent accounts for the year ending December 31, 2020.
Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, Chairman of the National Cathedral Board, addressed the findings in a letter dated Tuesday, September 24, 2024, to church leaders, stating that the audit was a key demand from both Christian leadership and the general public to ensure the project’s financial credibility.
“With the completion of this report, preparations are underway for construction to resume. We appreciate your support so far and trust that the ongoing audit will renew your prayers and financial support for the NCG project,” the statement read.
The National Cathedral project has faced significant public criticism, particularly after allegations from North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who raised concerns about impropriety and financial misconduct in the construction process. He accused Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, Secretary to the Board of Trustees, of a conflict of interest and petitioned the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for investigation.
In response to these concerns, the Board referred its financial records to Deloitte for an independent audit to uphold transparency.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to complete the National Cathedral project if elected president, emphasizing the significant state funds already committed to the construction.
