The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of merely engaging in “firefighting” when it comes to addressing discrepancies in the Voters Register.

According to him, rather than the commission engaging in the ‘touch and go’ method to address the discrepancies in the 2024 voter register, it should allow for a forensic audit, which he added, would purge the register entirely.

His comments followed the EC’s announcement that it would re-exhibit the corrected Provisional Voters Register (PVR) online before finalising the register for the 2024 elections.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Dr. Tanko Computer criticised the EC’s approach, alleging that the commission only responds to issues raised by the NDC rather than proactively investigating problems in the register.

“The electoral Commission as of now is doing firefighting. When the NDC comes out with something then they run after it and when they do they come out with a press statement or conference without bothering to go around the entire register to see whether we have the same issue happening in other constituencies or districts.

“As we speak now, the same Modus Operandi used in the Tamale South and Sagnerigu where voters were pushed to Pusiga, is appearing in Asumafu-South and Abetifi in the Ahafo and in the Volta Region where people’s data are transferred illegally without their knowledge. S0 when we gave them a teaser of the one in Tamale, they quickly ran after it and put it in there.

“They didn’t take their time to go through the whole system to see whether similar things happened. This is the issue we are talking about. They should stop firefighting and rather let us sit down, do this forensic thing and sack all those crooks who went into their system and manipulated the data without their knowledge,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the EC has maintained that the call for a forensic audit is premature, arguing that the legal and administrative mechanisms established to clean the register have not been fully utilised, making a forensic audit unnecessary at this stage.

The Commission also assured the NDC and the general public that it will re-exhibit the corrected Provisional Voters Register (PVR) online before printing the Final Register for the 2024 Elections.
