The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has admonished its members to use their influence to ensure their subjects conduct themselves well and refrain from any form of violence as the country heads to the December 7 general elections.
The President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs Nene Sakite II, Konor of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council, who made this call, urged all chiefs to desist from partisan politics but support whoever comes out victorious after the December 7 elections.
Nene Sakite II while addressing members of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs at a two-day training workshop on the Constitutional and Legal Basis of Chieftaincy in Ghana and litigation at the Royal Senchi Hotel in Asuogyaman, indicated that it is important to maintain the enviable peace the country has enjoyed over the years, also called on politicians to avoid hate speeches.
“Our chieftaincy institution has been bedevilled with a lot of disputes and the Eastern Region has had its fair share of all these disputes. This has been a major challenge for all of us and it is what has occasioned this all-important workshop for Nananom. I trust that all leave there well-equipped to tackle this litigation menace we are faced with at our various our traditional councils.
“Also, as Nananom are aware, we will be going to polls to elect a new president for our nation Ghana in December and I wish to use this opportunity to plead with Nananom to ensure the peaceful conduct of their indigenes before, during and after elections to maintain the enviable peace Ghana has enjoyed over the years.
“We must all be ready to support whoever will be elected on December 7, as our national president. We must also try to be moderate in our utterances and try to desist from partisan politics,” he stated.
The chief of the Akyem Abuakwa State, Osaagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, speaking to journalists expressed optimism that this year’s elections will be peaceful.
“We have done it more times and we are going to do it again and every time we do it, we always come out successful. Peace is what we need. It is an election, you vote for who you like to improve your situation and you go home and wait for the election results. We are not new to this, I think peace will prevail,” he stated.
