The National Democratic Congress (NDC) met with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders on Monday, September 23, to present errors in the voters’ register and justify its demand for a forensic audit ahead of the 2024 elections.

The NDC leadership raised concerns about discrepancies allegedly uncovered during the August exhibition exercise when the Electoral Commission (EC) provided the party with the provisional voters’ register.

According to the NDC, one of the key issues identified was the presence of over 243,000 allegedly illegal names on the list of transferred voters.

A meeting was held at the EC’s headquarters on Friday, September 6, to discuss resolving these discrepancies, but it ended inconclusively.

In response, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah declared a nationwide protest, which took place on Tuesday, September 17, to pressure the EC into agreeing to the forensic audit.

Following the protest, a petition was formally submitted to the EC, with the Deputy Chairman in charge of operations promising that the concerns would be thoroughly reviewed.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, reiterated the party’s key demands, which include:

  1. Publishing the findings of the forensic audit.
  2. Re-exhibiting the voters’ register after the audit.
  3. Reviewing and correcting all unauthorized voter transfers.
  4. Adopting a revised timeline for electoral activities without affecting the December 7 election date.
  5. Instituting accountability and integrity measures to prevent future manipulation of the voters’ register.

Dr. Omane Boamah also suggested that the EC’s resistance to conducting a forensic audit could indicate a fear of further discrepancies being uncovered through thorough scrutiny.
