An unusual incident occurred at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Sunday, September 22, when smoke was detected from a passenger’s luggage in Terminal 3.
The incident, which took place around 3:27 p.m. at the baggage wrap area, prompted a swift response from the airport’s Aviation Security team.
Upon discovering the smoke, the security team quickly isolated the bag. In line with Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) protocols, all passengers in the terminal were evacuated to ensure their safety. The entire process followed the GACL’s established Emergency Operations procedures.
Subsequent investigations led to the passenger being handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for interrogation.
Management in a statement indicated that travellers carrying batteries in luggage violate International Civil Aviation Regulations.
Any such items, or other prohibited substances, will be confiscated and further action will be taken against the violators.
KIA management extended its appreciation to passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation. They reaffirmed that the safety of all passengers is their utmost priority, adding that normal operations at Terminal 3 resumed shortly after the incident.
