The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its decision to return the filing fees of all disqualified presidential aspirants for the 2024 elections.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, made this known during a press briefing in Accra on Friday, September 20, 2024.
The move follows the disqualification of several candidates from participating in the upcoming December 7, 2024, presidential race.
In a communiqué issued on the same day, the EC disclosed that notable figures such as Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP) were among those disqualified.
Other aspirants affected by the disqualification include Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, and Nii Amu Darko.
The list also includes Samuel Apea-Danquah, Desmond Abrefah, and Kofi Asamoah-Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
Meanwhile, the EC has confirmed 13 candidates who will contest in the 2024 presidential elections. Among these are Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and independent candidates such as business tycoon Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar.
The EC’s decision to refund the filing fees offers a small consolation to the disqualified aspirants as the presidential race heats up ahead of the December polls.
