The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its preparedness to maintain security and order during the nationwide demonstration organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

The demonstration is in response to the NDC’s concerns regarding alleged discrepancies in the voter register managed by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, September 16, 2024, the Director of Police Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, emphasised that the police are fully equipped to ensure safety throughout the protests, which will occur in all 16 regional capitals of Ghana.

During the protests, NDC executives are expected to submit petitions to the EC’s regional offices and its headquarters in Accra.

The demonstration comes amid rising tensions between the NDC and the EC over the integrity of the voter register ahead of the 2024 elections.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi also reminded the NDC of its obligations under Section 3 of the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), which governs the conduct of public demonstrations.

“We would like to once again give assurance that the police will ensure the maintenance of security, law and order throughout the period of the exercise and beyond,” she stated.
