An inferno in the early hours of Wednesday gutted three auto parts shops and a cold store on the Kamara Mamprobi stretch, in the Greater Accra Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started from a faulty electrical system in one of the spare parts shops, which led to the flames and subsequently spread to surrounding shops.
In his narration to Channel One News, the Divisional Officer in charge of operations at the Dansoman Fire station, William Sackey, said that upon arrival at the scene, they noticed that the main service wire close to the shops, was giving off electrical shocks and had to call for backup in order to contain the fire.
He revealed that investigations were underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
“This morning around 5:45, we received a distress call that there was fire around Kamara, near the Apostolic Church. So, our men were dispatched to the fire scene and upon arrival, we saw that three of the containers were amidst electrical shops from the main service wire. So, quickly our men got to work, and, in the process, we had to call for backup from our Circle Fire Station to come and make additional pot at the fire scene.”
“We also noticed that the teaming crowd were going to create a little bit of problem so we called for police backup. It was just around 8:45 am that we managed to bring the fire under control,” he stated.
A salesman of one of the affected shops, Joseph Acquah said he had observed that the shop was giving off electrical shocks the previous day but was ignored by the shop’s owner after registering his complaints to him.
“One of the containers began giving electrical shocks yesterday. We called the owner of that shop alerting him to come and check what exactly was wrong, but he told us to leave it, so he was going to come today to see to the problem because of last night’s rain, we didn’t pay attention to it again but at dawn, we began seeing little sparks of fire and because of the wiring, it developed into a bigger fire,” he stated.
