The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, Pius Enam Hadzide, has clarified his recent remarks encouraging voters to support him if they want their children to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup.

According to him, he intended to facilitate the constituents if they wanted to travel outside the country to study, work or even watch the World Cup in the USA but not to grant them visas.

This comes after he asked voters to support him if they want their children to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup. He claimed it could open doors for young Ghanaians to engage in international sporting events.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda, Mr Hadzide explained that his promise to voters was not limited to the World Cup but part of a broader vision to help constituents access international experiences and opportunities, including education, work, and sporting events.

Addressing concerns over the idea of securing visas, Mr Hadzide clarified that he had not promised to facilitate visas for his constituents.

“I am saying that as a MP, I see myself both as a legislator and as an agent of development. I have met a cross-section of my people, and I said to them that ‘believe in me.’ I know what it takes to bring people. I know what it takes to help people achieve their dreams and their visions and one of those dreams and visions is for people to expand their horizons, get new experiences, work elsewhere and probably also watch the World Cup.

“I made the promise from the bottom of my heart that I would help facilitate. I don’t know where the visa part is coming from. I never spoke about visa, it is only consulate officers who can grant that…Even now without being a MP, I operate a job centre in the constituency. I help people to get jobs in and outside of the country. Some of them travel to the Gulf areas to do legitimate business. Others travel elsewhere to do legitimate business, you can check from the constituents, and they will tell you that this is something that Pius has been doing.”

“So, I don’t see anything wrong with a MP helping their constituents to achieve and realise their dream. I am sorry but if people misunderstood it and people choose to play empty parochial partisan politics; that is their problem but as far as I am concerned, I am in this contest to win and to help and to serve the people,” he said.
