The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has admonished the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure transparency and fairness in the December 7 general elections.

The Catholic Bishops urged the EC to be impartial in its dealings and conduct as the law mandates it.

EC was also encouraged to facilitate a peaceful communication process “with all stakeholders and to address any concerns regarding the electoral process promptly and transparently.”

“We trust that the Electoral Commission will uphold its mandate with transparency and fairness. It is crucial that the Commission ensures that all electoral processes are carried out impartially and in accordance with the law.

“We encourage the Commission to facilitate open communication with all stakeholders and to address any concerns regarding the electoral process promptly and transparently,” the Bishops’ national president, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi said in a special address ahead of the crucial polls.

The Electoral Commission came under strict scrutiny after it exhibited the provisional voters register for the polls.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) raised concerns with ‘discrepancies’ it said were found in the register and demanded a meeting with the EC to discuss ways of resolving those discrepancies but the meeting was preceded by a live broadcast request by the NDC that was subsequently denied.
