Majeed Bawa, Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority, has hit back at critics of the Baba Yara Stadium’s condition following Ghana’s loss to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, sarcastically asking if Angola ‘were playing in the sky.’

The pitch was criticised before the match, with social media users highlighting its poor state.

After the game, the Head Coach, Otto Addo, partly blamed the poor pitch for centre-back Abdul Mumin’s error, calling it ‘not good.’

However, in an interview on Accra-based Asempa FM, Bawa defended the stadium, pointing out that both teams played on the same pitch.

“Are they suggesting that the Angolans were playing in the sky? They are all professionals, just like our players. CAF inspected and approved the pitch for the game.”

Angola’s head coach, Pedro Goncalves, also criticised the stadium, stating that ‘a country like Ghana deserves a better pitch and national stadium.’

The pitch condition had deteriorated after a five-day church event held at the stadium in July.

Ghana’s defeat leaves them third in Group F, with Angola and Sudan leading. The Black Stars hope to rebound in their next match against Niger on September 9.
