The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined his vision to transform Ghana’s ports into some of the most competitive globally.
He plans to achieve this by implementing policies such as a flat import duty rate system and aligning port duties with those of neighbouring Togo—or even lower—aiming to enhance predictability and curb smuggling.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in the Tema Central Constituency, Dr Bawumia emphasized that a dedicated team has been assembled to ensure that all relevant charges are incorporated under the proposed flat duty system.
“So, next year, I’m going to give a tax amnesty to all businesses. They’re all individuals. So, we don’t have any problems with GRA and everything. We will all start from a clean slate with a new tax system that everybody can understand and we can calculate. So, again, we want to change the duty system at the port.
“So, as we speak, I have a team working and trying to put these things together and I know that they will contact all of you. Because the best way to operationalise things is to talk to the people who are working with these things and this is what I want to do,” he stated.
