The Running Mate to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 Flagbearer, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says the NDC government will remove the corruption and fronting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has introduced into the sale of premix and subsidy support to fishermen.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang who was addressing a durbar of Chiefs and residents of Shama on the second day of her 3-day Western Regional campaign tour said because of corruption, there are a lot of people who are not fishermen but have hijacked the sale of premix fuel meant for fishermen and denying them the opportunity to fish.
“When we were in government and used to give fishing gears like fishing nets, premix or outboard motors to fishermen, it was done openly. Now there is so much secrecy in the sale of premix fuel.”
“We now have people who are not fishermen but doing business with premix fuel. The fish harvested don’t come in party colours and are bought by all people, so we have to take care of the fisherman. I’m from a fishing community so I understand the sufferings of the fisherman,” she said.
NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Shama, Emelia Arthur on her part said the NPP has deceived the people of Shama hence it was time they give the NDC the opportunity to come back
Earlier, Prof Opoku-Agyemang addressed the Chief and people of Funko in the Ahanta West Constituency where she said the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government has rewarded Ghanaians with hardship and pain and therefore urged residents of Funkoe and the Ahanta West Constituency to massively vote for the NDC to enable them to fix their roads and also deal with other pressing concerns they have.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ahanta West, Kuukua Bissue said the NDC seeks to address the development concerns of the Ahanta West following the disappointment they have suffered from the NPP government.
On her first stop at Tarkwa in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, Prof Opoku-Agyemang was mopped by joyous party supporters and residents of Tarkwa as they welcomed her to the constituency with singing and dancing.
She toured and interacted with traders at the Tarkwa Central Market. Some traders said they would vote for the Flagbearer of the NDC and her running mate due to the NDC’s good works in Tarkwa in the past, the promised Women’s Bank as well as the 24-hour economy.
A trader at the Tarkwa Main Market, Maame Efua Amissah said, “We accept Mahama and want him to come and continue with his good works because life was not difficult like this when he was the President. Life is difficult and business at the market here is also not good.”
“The 24-hour economy is coming, there would be more job opportunities for my siblings who are out of school. I will also be able to access loans from the Women’s Bank to do our business, so I’m so happy this afternoon. Mahama built hospitals, schools constructed roads and I know he will do more when he comes back hence, I’m still supporting him. I’m happy Naana has come here and he is promising us Women’s Bank, to help our business,” Ama Ataa, a trader in Tarkwa also said.
The 3-day tour of the Western Region by Prof Opoku-Agyemang will also take her to Essikadu-Ketan, Sekondi, Takoradi, Effia and Kwesimintsim where she is to have market engagements, durbar of chiefs, and meet identifiable stakeholders in the constituencies.
