The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has lost a transformer to thieves who vandalised and made away with some components of the transformer and its associated items at Asutuare Junction.
The 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer valued at about GH¢100,000 was discovered vandalised on the morning of Saturday, August 31, during a routine patrol by engineers who were on the move to fix a network issue as a result of a power outage situation.
According to sources, the criminals brought the transformer down, dismantled some parts and took away other components, a situation which has plunged the entire community into darkness, leaving other areas without power.
The Public Relations Officer for the power distribution company in the Tema region, Sakyiwaa Mensah, who confirmed the unfortunate incident to Channel One News indicated that the matter has been reported to the Doryumu Police Station.
“We would want to plead with the public to help us to protect ECG properties. Now, when transformers are vandalised in this way, the customers suffer because they would be out of supply for a while and the company also suffers in that resources will be rechanneled to get another transformer to replace the vandalised one.”
“If you see any unscrupulous persons around ECG installations, please report to the police,” Mensah stated.
