Fire is still emanating from the building that was engulfed in flames on Sunday, September 1, at Zongo Lane in Rawlings Park, Accra, despite two days of efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to extinguish it.
The fire, according to eyewitnesses, started at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and quickly spread through several structures causing extensive damage to several shops and properties and eventually leading to a partial collapse.
The total collapse of the building happened on September 3, as a result of the weakened floors and the intensity of the fire.
Initial reports indicate that the fire was caused by a faulty electric line in one of the shops.
According to a statement by the fire service, efforts are underway to fully douse the protracted fire.
It added that no firefighters nor civilian casualties have been recorded so far.
