The Minority group in Parliament has accused the government of deploying the military to intimidate voters under the guise of enforcing the ban on gain export.
Following a dry spell in the Northern parts of the country, the government has instituted a ban on gain export while deploying military personnel to enforce the ban at the borders.
However, the minority has raised doubts about the true intentions of the government, accusing it of attempts to suppress votes.
Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga in a press conference today, Friday, August 30, 2024, stated that there ought to be a timeline, within which the military can operate in the region.
“If they have no ulterior motives, then they ought to have given us timelines. The fact that there are no timelines gives us reasons to suspect that they only use the crisis, related to the drought up north and the potential for us to have some food security challenges, to deploy the military to intimidate voters.”
“Otherwise, there should be timelines. We further back our assertions with what happened in the roundup to the 2020 elections,” he stated.
