The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has ruled out the possibility of a merger between ECG, Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), and Volta River Authority (VRA).

Despite calls for these entities to be merged under a single umbrella to ensure a more effective supply of electricity to customers, Mahama dismissed the idea during an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV.

According to him, the current system is effective and does not require a merger, stating that only minor adjustments are needed.

When asked if it would be a great idea to bring the companies together,  he said, “No, it wouldn’t, the system as it is now is perfect. We’re just left with a few more tweaks here and there, as we need it to be.

“For example, for the longest time, we only had VRA, now the IPPs are involved, so you probably need the job of an independent market operator to man the distribution room and probably allow for equity within the game. These are business decisions, business management, and best practices that need to be infused into the game. If you ask me now that we should merge, no.”
