The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly condemned the Akufo-Addo government for its “insensitivity” towards the victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.
He stated that the government has neglected the victims and failed to provide them with adequate accommodation.
Ablakwa criticized the government for misplacing its priorities, highlighting the significant amount of money invested in the All African Games while neglecting the Akosombo dam spillage victims.
During an interview with Selorm Adonoo on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Ablakwa emphasized the need for a reset under the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
He accused the NPP government of lacking compassion and empathy for the vulnerable in society, adding that the touted economic rebound has not translated into tangible improvements in people’s lives.
“This so-called rebound is not reflecting in people’s lives. As I speak to you, my VRA spillage victims are still living in tents. I salute Citi FM for the tremendous job you did. All those who came to your aid [Citi FM/Channel One] when you appealed fantastically for our support, you notice that they will be so depressed to hear that a year after this disaster, people are still in tents.
“The government claims it doesn’t have resources for such priorities, to take care of displaced victims. People who no fault of theirs, you have altered their lives permanently, they have lost everything that they had. Yes, GHC80 million was earmarked in the budget we don’t know where that money is.
“Look at the things this government is spending on, are you aware that after we approved about $102 million that is what they said they needed from us, operational expenses? A few days ago, I discovered they are still withdrawing money for the 13th African Games. And you can look at us in the face and say that you cannot take care of displaced victims of VRA spillage, a disaster of that proportion.
“These are people who lack priorities, who lack conscience, who lack a heart, humanity, they have no sensitivity towards the plight of the Ghanaian people that is why this country needs a reset.”
Ablakwa once again applauded Channel One TV/Citi FM and Ghana Chamber of Mines for inaugurating an ultra-modern Health Center in Mepe.
