Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged to conduct a comprehensive review of Ghana’s 1992 constitution if elected president in the upcoming December polls.

This review, he explained, is crucial for achieving effective national development and enhancing good governance.

To ensure a collaborative approach, Dr Bawumia promised to engage with Parliament, stakeholders, and political parties in the review process, to strengthen the country’s governance structure.

He also vowed to reform the Chieftaincy Act, specifically Section 63, to empower chiefs and traditional leaders in local governance.

This reform, according to him, will include providing living allowances to Paramount Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs, and Queen mothers.

It will also include the encouragement of land registration without initial fees, with payments due only upon sale.

He made these promises during the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18.

“I’ll engage Parliament and other stakeholders, including Political parties, to review the 1992 constitution to achieve effective national development.”

“I’ll review Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act to empower Chiefs to strengthen local governance, pay living allowances to Paramount Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs, and Queen mothers; to encourage the registration of lands, all stool lands will be registered without initial fee payment. Payment will only be due when the land is sold and protect Ghanaian cultural and family value.”
