Traditional leaders in Zongo communities are strongly urging their members to refrain from any violent activities as the December general elections approach.
Emphasising the importance of a peaceful election, they urged Ghanaians and the Zongo community to be tolerant, as both flagbearers, from the two leading political parties are brothers.
They highlighted their efforts in sensitising the community and Ghanaians to ensure a peaceful election.
The main contenders are New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
They made these remarks during the launch of the Ashanti Region Council of Zongo Queen Mothers Association in Kumasi, the President of the Ashanti Regional Council of Zongo Chiefs, Naaba Musah Akambonga and the President of the Ashanti Regional Council of Zongo Queen Mothers.
The President of the Ashanti Regional Council of Zongo Queen Mothers, Sakinatu Mahama denounced the notion that people in the Zongo community are violent.
The National Vice President of the Council of Fulani Chiefs, Amir Osman Bin Ahmed, also urged Zongo youth not to allow themselves to be used as tools for destruction in the December elections.
“Politicians normally use the people in Zongo communities for their selfish gains. So, it’s the duty of we the leaders to also stand up and tell them that no, nobody will be used as a tool for their own political aim. We will look at their manifestoes, and policies and vote by our own conscience, we will not be used.
“The two major political parties are from the North, therefore we have to be very careful and not to be used. Let’s look at what each of them can offer. Nobody should be used again, nobody should be used to snatch a ballot box. No life will be destroyed.”
