Ghanaian hip-hop artist Lyrical Joe has shared insights into his involvement in the rap beef between Ghana’s Sarkodie and Nigeria’s Dremo.

In May 2024, Sarkodie released his track “Brag” as part of his project, The Championship Mixtape.

In the song, Sarkodie asserted his dominance in African rap, comparing himself to legends like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole.  He also claimed superiority over Nigerian artists like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, stating that he had already established himself in the industry before they gained fame.

Dremo, who is associated with Davido, took offence and fired back at Sarkodie with his own diss track. However, Sarkodie dismissed Dremo’s response, acknowledging only his potential.

Lyrical Joe then entered the fray, delivering a powerful response to Dremo with his track “1960,” referencing Nigeria’s year of independence. His lyrical prowess in the diss track left many Ghanaians impressed.

In an interview on The Chat on Channel One TV, Lyrical Joe revealed how he got involved in the beef.

He stated: “I was at my place, and people kept tagging me—not just any ordinary people. These are respected people from the industry. Some would even call your phone and tell you, ‘Yo, something is going on.’ Even with that, I still closed my ears to them. Until the heat was so much that my boss called and was like, ‘Yo Charlie, at this point, you have to do something because even me, people are calling me.’ So, when such calls come, I just go for it. It’s not like I am moving around waiting and I pick on people’s beef. No. I was called for it, basically, that is why I did it.”
