Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, the Secretary of the Okyenhene, has filed a lawsuit against Hopeson Adorye and Media General for defamatory statements made regarding the “Agyapadie” document.
According to the writ of summons, Mr Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change (M4C), appeared on Media General’s “Onua Maakye” programme around July 26 and made baseless comments about the “Agyapadie” document.
He also falsely identified Mr. Ofori-Atta as a co-writer of the document.
Among other things, Mr Adorye also noted that “I mentioned it, D.M Ofori Atta. It stated that he is a co-writer. He is a friend of mine and I know him and if you glance at the page that talks about the hijacking of GBC (laughs), it will never work. Now the judiciary governance in Ghana (laughs). It has been stated in here in the document. Let’s pack the court so that in the next twenty years they can be in control. Are you surprised more people are being nominated to the Supreme Court?”
Mr Adorye further alleged that the document was deliberately filled with images of President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and Dr JB Danquah, along with the insignia of Okyeman.
He claimed that these images and references to Mr. Ofori-Atta, Nana Bediatuo, and others, all associated with Ofori Panin Fie, were used to misrepresent the document as originating from Ofori Panin Fie.
As a result, Mr Ofori-Atta is seeking a court declaration that the statements made by Mr Adorye on Media General’s platform are defamatory. He is also demanding:
- GH₵10,000,000 in general damages, including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation.
- A public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements.
- A perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, including their agents and assigns, from repeating similar or any other defamatory statements against him.
