The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has disclosed plans to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to enhance the road networks leading to key tourist destinations across the country.

This initiative is in response to mounting concerns from both local and international tourists about the poor state of roads to tourist sites, which becomes particularly challenging during the rainy season.

Tourists visiting Ghana often express frustrations with the deteriorating state of roads to key place of interest. These complaints have been especially prevalent during the rainy season when heavy rains often exacerbate the already poor condition of the roads.

In an engagement with journalists, Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, acknowledged these challenges and provided assurances that significant efforts are underway to address them.

He also underscored the need to improve tourism-related infrastructure, including road access to the country’s numerous tourist attractions.

Mr Agyeman highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the GTA and other governmental agencies, particularly the Ministry of Roads and Highways, to tackle these challenges effectively.

He said the GTA is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure that at least the “last mile” of roads leading to popular tourist destinations are significantly improved.

“We still have a lot of work to do, especially engagements with other agencies on tourism infrastructure. The roads to some of the tourist sites especially when it comes to a period like this when it is a rainy season, we get a lot of complaints.

“People wanting to visit tourist sites and then the rains and then the road network, so we are working with the Ministry of Roads through our ministry to make sure that at least the last mile to some of the tourist sites is improved.”
