The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to apologise to Ghanaians for the economic hardships they have endured under their administration.

Mahama emphasised that the Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, is not the appropriate person to offer such an apology, as he was recently appointed and was not part of the core team responsible for the policies that have led to the current situation.

This follows a recent apology from Dr Amin Adam to Ghanaians for the hardships caused by the government’s policies, particularly the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

The Finance Minister, addressing a town hall meeting in Accra explained that the debt restructuring was necessary to secure the IMF facility and asked for forgiveness from the public.

“We needed to restructure our debts because it was one of the requirements by the IMF. We started with the domestic debt exchange programme, the domestic exchange programme was very successful, achieving 95 percent participation. On this note, I would like to appeal to the people of this country to forgive us,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.

However, John Mahama insists that the apology should come from the Head of the Economic Management Team, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the flagbearer of the NPP, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking during his campaign in the Volta Region on Wednesday, Mahama argued that Dr. Amin Adam, being a recent appointee, should not be the one offering the apology.

“This Finance Minister they just brought yesterday, he is not part of those who have put us where we are. They brought him, ‘okay, go and apologise’, it’s not his apology we want. He just came.

“Those who must apologise are 1. Jack Toronto (a nickname he has given to President Akufo-Addo), 2. the Head of the solid Economic Management Team, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he stated.

“Even whatever apology they give, Ghanaians must send them back into opposition. We either change or do more of the same. We are disatisfied with more of the same so definitely something must give, change must happen,” he charged.
