The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Mineral Commission officials in the area were told the Asante Akim Central Assembly was only carrying out a dredging exercise but mining was being done at their blind side.

The place is now being blocked to prevent people travelling on the highway to have an idea of the destruction.

The activities of the miners have heavily polluted the Owere River and residents are not happy about the situation.

A resident who spoke with Channel One News said “You can’t even sleep. The machines, they work every now and then. Even as at 12 am when we close and we get to the house they will still be using their machines and it [makes] noise, ” she stated.

  • Another also stated “The river was clear, we used to drink from the river. But since the galamsey began, you can’t use it for anything, you can’t even drink it. The river has been destroyed.”
