The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s intentions to rewrite the country’s history will not succeed.

This follows the president’s strong rejection of the notion that Ghana was founded by a single individual.

In his 2024 Founders’ Day address on Saturday, August 3, the president stated his disagreement with claims that Dr Kwame Nkrumah singlehandedly founded Ghana.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Mr Ayariga indicated his assessment of occurrences in history showed that Dr Nkrumah was the brain behind Ghana.

He therefore indicated that what President Akufo-Addo was advocating would not be successful.

“So far as I am concerned my interpretation of history is different. You don’t found a nation simply because you participated in fighting for independence. For me, it takes more than that…I am talking about founding beyond who fought for independence because the question who fought for independence is not the same as who founded Ghana as a nation.

“Ghana as a nation is the territory. Don’t forget that Togoland wanted to split. Who fought for Togoland not to split and be part of Ghana- was it not Nkrumah… Who really envisioned and had the drive and pushed for Akosombo so that he will push the nation to have the capacity to develop is Nkrumah.”

“…What you are advocating just doesn’t make sense. So I can understand that his grandfathers were involved and he is the president now and thinks that he can rewrite history. It won’t wash, it won’t succeed because everybody knows what happened,” he stated.
