The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has refuted claims of strained relations between Ghana and the Republic of Burkina Faso.
This comes after the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama, in a campaign tour in the Upper East Region, accused President Akufo-Addo of allegedly damaging Ghana’s relationship with Burkina, leading to “diplomatic tension.”
However, the ministry in a statement, noted that the former president’s claim of diplomatic tension between the two countries is unfounded and lacks substantial evidence or merit.
The statement also outlined several efforts that have been put in place over the years, especially, under the current government, to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.
This includes a strengthened border commission of both countries, and good working relations between the Electricity Company of Ghana and the SONABEL Power Company, among others.
“It is crucial to emphasise that Ghana is committed to maintaining a cordial and productive diplomatic relationship with Burkina Faso. Our interactions with Burkina Faso are guided by the principles of mutual respect and cooperation.
“The ministry, therefore, calls for a focus on building bridges and strengthening ties with our neighbours rather than spreading falsehood that only serves to undermine the spirit of international cooperation,” the statement read.
