The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has denied allegations that its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, is touring the region to counter the influence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant.
These claims emerged following reports that Mahama had cut short his Northern regional tour to address issues in the Volta Region due to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign activities there.
In a statement released on Thursday, Sorkpa K. Agbleze, the NDC Volta Regional Communications Officer, clarified that Mahama and the NDC had just concluded a four-day campaign tour of the Upper East Region, which ended on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024.
“His subsequent decision to visit the Volta Region was pre-planned and as such part of our comprehensive national campaign strategy. It is not a reactive response to any ‘intense pressure’ from the Volta Regional Executives to come to save the Region from any so-called ‘inroads’ made by the Flagbearer of the NPP during his recent campaign tour as erroneously reported by Asaase Radio,” he stated.
Mr Agbleze categorically rejected the notion that Mr Mahama’s choice of the Volta Region as his next stop indicates any abandonment of the Northern Region to rescue any damage caused to the Volta Regional fortunes of the Party.
According to him, the NDC’s honest message continues to resonate strongly with the people of the North and our trust and confidence in the people of the Volta Region remains unshaken.
Mr Agbleze therefore indicated that the Volta Region remains “the world bank of the NDC and that bond cannot in any way be compromised by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s weakest flagbearer in recent history.”
“The Volta Region, like all regions in Ghana, is crucial to our campaign, and any attempts to construe scheduled visits as desperate face-saving political moves are not only a deliberate fabrication but a blatant disregard for factual and responsible reporting.”
