The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has vowed to intensify its efforts to combat illegal activities, particularly theft and tampering with its installations.
This commitment comes after the arrest of four individuals involved in stealing cable drums valued at approximately GH¢500,000.
The suspects, two Nigerians and two Ghanaians were apprehended in June 2024 while spraying the ECG logo on the stolen cable drums.
Further investigation revealed that the cables were sold to the suspects by three ECG contractors.
Paul Abariga, the Director of Investigation, Prosecution, and Security at ECG, addressed the media, warning the public about the consequences of engaging in such illegal activities.
“One of the Nigerians called Lucky was caught on video… spraying the inscriptions of ECG on one of the drums trying to hide the identity of the drum and then to carry it away into another place. This has been going on for some time but this time around his luck ran out on them and we pounced on them. All this while, they were aided by two Ghanaians.
“S0, we thought that Ghanaians should know that we are working very assiduously to help make sure the power industry and for that matter the distribution of power in this country is still relaxed.
“We thought that the general public should just know that you cannot do a thing such as this against ECG and go scot-free. We are very vigilant now and we are watching everywhere,” he stated.
