Disgruntled staff of the Produce Buying Company of Ghana (PBC) have converged at Abeka Junction in a fierce protest over their unpaid salaries.

This gathering marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle of PBC employees, who have been facing financial hardships due to the prolonged delays in the payment of their salaries.

The discontented workers, united in their cause, are marching towards the company’s headquarters in Dzorwulu. Their objective is to directly confront the management and demand immediate action to address their grievances.

The workers, donning red attire symbolising their frustration and determination, are carrying placards with messages calling for improved working conditions and timely payment of salaries.

Wednesday’s protest is not an isolated incident. A similar demonstration took place in the Ashanti region on May 29, 2024, highlighting the widespread discontent among PBC staff across different regions.

The aggrieved workers are also urging state agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the financial management of the company.

The Vice Chairman of the Workers Union of PBC, Seth Adusei, called on the government, particularly Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to expedite processes to pay their twelve-month outstanding salaries.

“Some of our members have various health conditions, others have died, and others have been ejected from their various homes and we believe that the president can do something about it, starting with paying our salaries.

“It is very difficult to live a full year in Ghana without receiving salary and how do we feed our families and take care of our homes. We urge the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to break the unpaid cycle before thinking of breaking the 8. We are also asking him to come and take away the current management that you have brought to us.”

The financial troubles of PBC have not only affected the employees but have also led to legal battles involving the company’s assets. PBC was on the verge of selling off some of its properties to manage its financial woes when the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and five other banks intervened. These banks secured a court order preventing any sale or transfer of assets, including the company’s headquarters located at Number 106 Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Dzorwulu Junction in Accra.
