The Coalition of Students from the Schools of Hygiene has raised concerns about their unpaid trainee allowances for up to two years, demanding immediate government action to address their grievances.
The coalition, in a statement, noted that allowances date back to January 2023, as well as a full year of arrears for the 2021 certificate batch from the Ho School of Hygiene, remain unsettled.
According to the group, attempts to resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue were thwarted, with security personnel preventing their access to the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.
The students are calling for immediate action from the government to address their demands and alleviate the mounting anxiety among trainees.
“These together with certain hostile conditions we face in school, have compelled us to reach out to the general public for aid. Hygiene schools remain the centre of training for environmental health officers who have remained the driving force in solving our sanitation challenges in the country since 1925. So as a coalition, we believe that when trainees are treated better, the future of the Environmental Health Profession shall be a promising one.
“We sincerely hope our demands are met immediately so we can calm down the rising nerves,” the coalition stated.
