Tamale Central MP Murtala Mohammed has called on Ghanaians to vote for John Dramani Mahama, dismissing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s appeal for Muslim votes based on his faith.
Speaking at a campaign launch and health walk in the Asawase constituency on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Murtala Mohammed criticised Bawumia for actions he claims contradict Islamic teachings.
Mohammed condemned Bawumia for allegedly lying, which he says is against Islamic principles, and urged voters to prioritise capabilities and commitment over religious affiliations.
He praised Asawase MP Muntaka Muhammad for his integrity and contributions to the Muslim community, including securing a dedicated prayer space in Parliament.
The Tamale Central MP also criticised Vice President Bawumia for his silence on issues affecting Muslims, such as the denial of rights to Muslim students and the conflict in Palestine.
He contrasted this with former President Mahama’s support for the Palestinian people, highlighting President Nana Addo’s pro-Israel stance.
Murtala Mohammed urged voters to support Muntaka and Mahama to secure a parliamentary majority and “reset” the country. He emphasised that voting for Muntaka is crucial for the NDC’s success, regardless of personal opinions.
“We are asking you to vote for Hon. Muntaka because he represents the entire Umar in parliament. I can tell you today, we have a befitting place we pray. If you come to parliament on Friday, there is a befitting place to pray. It was because of this effort.
“When our brother Dr Bawumia goes about telling people to vote for me because I am a Muslim, I have a simple question for him. Islam says you shouldn’t lie, he is consistently lying. Islam says you should have a principled position, when Wesley Girls Muslim students were denied their basic rights to practice their religion, Hon Muntaka galvanised us and we spoke loudly on it, he led us to meet the minister for education.
“He led the team to meet many people including the vice president. Dr Bawumia never uttered a single word,” he said.
