The Minority in Parliament has criticised the Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T Hammond over the government’s decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian-based firm, West Africa Agro Limited for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

The minister on August 2, revealed government’s decision to lease the sugar processing company is to revive the company’s operations to meet domestic demand.

In an interaction with Citi News, the First Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim said K.T Hammond’s recent actions justify his late appointment as a Minister in the Akufo-Addo government.

“Ghanaians do not understand why KT was on the bench and Nana Addo was not giving him a ministerial position. Just this injury time, look at the harm he wants to cause. Almost everything when you hear his name is a problem.

“Why will you sell Komenda Sugar Factory which was constructed for $35 million for just less than $18 million? and why the rush to sell it?

“If you know that you are doing one district one factory those few factories available you are selling them. Doesn’t it defeat the slogan of one district one factory? So, which factory are you giving to the Komeda people, what they have, you are taking away to give to a private company?

“So, what are you giving to them? He should leave it. But for me, I am convinced why he was allowed to spend seven years without being a minister. Now he has justified Nana Addo that he was right,” he stated.
