Dr. Omane Boamah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of Elections, has expressed grave concerns about the Electoral Commission’s voter register, describing it as “sick and unfit for purpose”.
He has questioned the accuracy of the current voter register, which the EC claims has 18,681,366 registered voters, and is demanding a transparent and comprehensive audit.
In a Facebook post, Dr Boamah urged NDC agents and senior officials to closely monitor the Electoral Commission’s upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise, scheduled from August 1 to 3, 2024, to ensure the integrity of the process.
The exercise aims to register an additional 50,000 to 70,000 new voters across 268 District Offices, 26 Public Universities, and 41 Prison Centres.
He stressed the need for heightened vigilance, citing unresolved concerns about the Electoral Commission’s voter registration figures and the alarming presence of stolen and un-retrieved Biometric Voter Registration laptops in the possession of criminal elements, which could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
“Accordingly, we urge NDC agents and political actors across the country to be extra vigilant throughout the three-day registration period.
“This call for heightened vigilance from the high echelons of our great party is necessary because the current voters register, which the EC states has 18,681,366 voters, is not fit for purpose! The voters register is sick.
“Additionally, NDC agents must be extra vigilant because there are still stolen and un-retrieved Biometric Voter Registration laptops in the hands of criminals.”
