Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West, says his experiences garnered from serving in the Finance Ministry and the parliamentary finance committee have given him a deeper understanding of the country’s economic trajectory.
He emphasised that this knowledge has led him to question the value of partisanship in politics.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, Mr Kwarteng expressed concern about the negative reactions to suggestions for improving the country, noting that the focus should be on the country’s well-being rather than on defending party lines.
“As I get older and especially spending time in the ministry and also coming here as the Chairman for the Finance Committee you come face to face more with the realities of our country’s economy and it also gives you a better understanding of where our economy is going.”
“When you have that much information, you begin to lose your appetite for partisanship because you understand the problem and when sometimes people react, say negatively to suggestions about we having to fix our country and they say you would give the impression that we have not managed the economy well, I am thinking will all that matter if in the end, the country goes down,” he stated.
Mr Kwarteng further clarified that his call for better management of the country and a stable democracy stems from his love for his political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He believes that a well-managed country and a stable democracy will provide a conducive environment for the NPP to continue serving the country effectively.
“So, it is more out of love for my political party that I want this country to be managed well, our democracy to be stable so that my beloved NPP can continue operating and doing for this country what we are capable of doing,” he said.
