The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has reaffirmed the party’s readiness for a public debate between John Mahama of the NDC and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This comes after Dr. Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, accused the NDC flagbearer of avoiding a potential debate out of fear that his “empty policies” would be exposed. Despite Mahama’s reluctance, Bawumia expressed eagerness for the debate.

In an interview with Accra-based GHOne TV, Basintale stated that the NDC has been calling for a debate since 2020. He emphasized that the NDC is confident in its policies and governance track record and welcomes the opportunity to compare them publicly.

Basintale also challenged the NPP to measure their achievements against those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, before seeking a debate with Mahama.

“We have been begging them for a debate for far too long and have asked them to come face-to-face. Let’s compare President Mahama’s records with theirs. I saw a video of Dr. Bawumia saying he wants a debate. They should first debate Dr. Kwame Nkrumah if they want to compare their records to his. They should do that first because we have been calling for it for a long time. President Mahama told them to leave Nkrumah and come face him,” Basintale stated.
