President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the flagbearer of the opposition NDC, John Mahama, to acknowledge his role in introducing the Free SHS policy and not appropriate the credit for himself.

According to Akufo-Addo, when he first announced his intention to introduce the Free SHS policy, then-President Mahama criticised him but now seeks to take credit for the initiative.

This statement comes in response to John Dramani Mahama’s claim that the Free SHS policy was initiated by his government in 2015.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in honour of the party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, on Tuesday, July 9, Akufo-Addo remarked that the former president is attempting to claim the success of the Free SHS policy as his own.

“This leader criticised us when we said we were going to implement the Free SHS policy. Now that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, he is saying he is the one who introduced Free SHS. Have you ever heard such a thing?”

“He indeed said that we are forgetful people. Will we forget this too?”

“Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS. If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it? He said if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in free education.”

“If today he has seen the importance of the policy, he should credit me,” Akufo-Addo stated.
