A former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Baba Jamal, has stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not surprised by Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s appointment as the running mate for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, Dr. Opoku Prempeh lacks the competence to be a running mate, explaining that his selection was based on his Ashanti heritage and proximity to Manhyia.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Baba Jamal stated that the NDC had anticipated NAPO’s selection as the running mate for Dr. Bawmuia.

He noted also that NAPO is “lucky” to be in a safe constituency and appointed to positions, but his record lacks outstanding accomplishments in his constituency and during his time at the Ministry of Education.

“It was always pick an Ashanti, pick an Ashanti, and if you look at it very well, NAPO is the one close to Manhyia, and also, NAPO has always been scoring over 80% in all the elections that he has contested. More so, he is the closest to Manhyia when it comes to Ashanti politics. So definitely went in his favour it’s not about competence at all. It’s about consideration for Ashanti, and Ashanti must come on the ticket.”

He added, “So we [NDC] are not surprised at all; we have been expecting him long ago. Because when you talk about competence, he has been lucky to be in a safe constituency; he has been lucky to be appointed, but please, can you tell me any outstanding achievement of NAPO?”

“There is no outstanding achievement in his constituency not to talk about his time at the Ministry of Education.”
