The National Identification Authority Division of the Public Service Workers’ Union (PSWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, has announced an indefinite strike beginning on June 10, 2024.

This industrial action is a response to the government’s neglect in improving the subpar working conditions and establishing better terms of service for the staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA).

On June 9, the union released a statement indicating that it had initially postponed its strike planned for March 2024 due to the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations’ intervention.

Nevertheless, the absence of advancements in the negotiation talks has compelled the union to proceed with the strike.

The decision to strike is based on multiple issues, notably the government’s inability to expedite the negotiation process and to provide specific allowances to the employees of the NIA.

The PSWU has called upon its members across the country to comply with this directive until an update is provided, leading to the suspension of all services at NIA facilities, encompassing district, regional, and premium offices.
