Tensions have escalated at the Cantonment police station as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered in protest over the arrest of Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East Constituency.

The demonstration, led by NDC’s National Organiser, George Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo, has resulted in blocked roads and the burning of tyres, with the number of protestors reportedly increasing.

Ms Okunor was taken into custody following her admission of possessing a firearm.

In response, NDC supporters have been seen holding signs with the hashtag #FreeNaaKoryooNow, expressing their demand for her immediate release.

The flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, has publicly denounced the detention, labelling it as an act that could exacerbate political unrest.

Mr. Mahama further called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Dampare and the government to acknowledge the critical role of justice in upholding peace and stability, advocating for the swift release of Ms. Okunor.
