In the aftermath of a catastrophic fire at Circle ECOMOG on June 5, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Titus-Glover, has issued a directive to halt all forms of building activities along the stretch.

The fire, which erupted around 4 PM, destroyed numerous wooden structures, causing chaos as residents hurried to secure their safety and belongings.

The Minister, addressing the media, noted that security presence will be increased in the area to ensure that nobody builds along the ECOMOG stretch.

“As you can see in the pylon, the smoke if it should ignite the whole area is going to suffer and the damage and the destruction will be devastating. Because if a line catches fire, it runs through. So, we are going to make sure that nobody is going to live here and I insist because the safety of the people here is very important.”

“This is a national asset, this is a GRIDCo line that is transmitting power all over the place. So, whoever is living here is doing so at their own peril. But we will make sure we will drive everybody from here. We will make sure the police are here 24/7. If we see anybody here, we will get you arrested,” he stated.

A resident, identified as Super Scary, recounted the chaotic scene as the flames quickly engulfed the area. “It all happened so fast. One moment everything was normal, and the next, there was fire everywhere,” he said.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire remains unknown, but preliminary investigations suggest that the tightly packed wooden structures and possibly flammable materials stored within may have contributed to the intensity of the blaze.
