During the ‘International Dialogue on Migration’ at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, renowned Highlife artist Kofi Kinaata captivated global delegates with an inspiring speech.

Kinaata took the opportunity to reflect on his experiences since becoming the Goodwill Ambassador for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Ghana in 2017, a role he has undertaken with zeal.

He shared the reasons behind his decision to become an ambassador, emphasising the profound effect of IOM’s efforts.

His speech highlighted the significant and positive changes brought about by IOM’s programs in the lives of many who have been reintegrated back into society.

“Speaking to returnees helped me understand their experiences, which I then used to create songs that resonate with their stories,” he explained.

Furthermore, Kinaata discussed the personal obstacles he encounters in songwriting on the topic of migration. His interactions with returnees have been instrumental in deepening his insight and compassion, enabling him to craft songs that resonate with meaning and influence.

Kinaata’s speech was met with admiration and respect from the international delegation, many of whom recognized the power of music in raising awareness about migration issues.

His dedication and efforts as a Goodwill Ambassador have significantly contributed to the ongoing dialogue on migration, making a profound impact both in Ghana and internationally.
