President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a consensus on the necessary constitutional amendments sought by Ghanaians.
Numerous distinguished Ghanaians, civil society organisations, political parties, youth, and other groups have advocated for revisions to the 1992 Constitution. This review has become essential due to the perceived challenges of certain provisions of the Constitution, which are seen as hindrances to the evolution of Ghana’s democracy.
During his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in parliament in Accra on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of reaching a mutual understanding regarding the alterations that the majority of Ghanaians wish to see in Ghana’s constitution.
He clarified that the 1992 constitution was not arbitrarily created, but was drafted by Ghanaians to cater to their needs.
Therefore, President Akufo-Addo pointed out that it could be revised to accommodate the evolving needs and circumstances of Ghanaians.
“Our constitution did not descend from heaven. We Ghanaians drew it up to serve our needs and we can amend it to suit our changing needs and circumstances. We should work towards finding a consensus on the changes the majority of Ghanaians want made to the constitution,” he stated.
