The Ga-Adangbe youth in the Greater Accra Region are putting forward a strong demand for the ruling NPP to impress upon its 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to choose a Ga-Adangbe as running mate.
The group said it is an undeniable fact that some Ga stalwarts played various key roles in the United Party (UP), the mother party of the NPP, with the Ga Shifimokpee being one of the political parties that came together to form the UP.
Addressing journalists, the group said, “These personalities of Ga origin are founding members of our great tradition whose legacies deserve to be remembered and honoured, but unfortunately, it appears the Ga people have been relegated to the background in the NPP.”
According to the group, some comments made by the former speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye calling on the NPP to choose the NPP’s running mate from the Ashanti Region is an insult to the Ga state and demands an apology.
“We also read from social media platforms and some Ghana newspapers that our brother and father, Prof Mike Oquaye said the NPP running mate should come from the Ashanti Region. It’s a disgrace and a very big insult to Ga and the Dangbes” the Spokesperson said.
They say the Ashantis, Akyem and the North have had their share of being the President or the Vice Presidents and the time has come for the Gas to be considered.
The group believed there are equally good and competent GAs who can partner with Dr Bawumia to execute the “break the 8 agenda.”
They further listed names such as Irene Naa Torshie, Elisabeth Sackey, Okoe Boye, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Oboshie Sai Kwofie, Henry Quartey and Lord Commey, as industrious personalities who had the charisma to help Dr Bawumia and the NPP achieve their 2024 goal.
The opinion leaders in Greater Accra, who were Ga Dangme indigenes, expressed dissatisfaction with the various political parties’ continuous neglect of Gas to occupy the presidency.
“All the parties have never considered Ga Adangbe person for Presidential positions. We want to tell both NPP, NDC and other parties that in times like this, we need a Ga to be a running mate,” the spokesperson of the group Bless Nettey said.
The youth group expressed confidence that the party’s leadership would act on their request since they have a say in the outcome of general elections.
