Neo Hutiri, a South African engineer, has been recognized as the best among the best after a decade of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.
He was the recipient of the Africa Prize in 2019 and was recently honoured with the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 10th-anniversary medal, surpassing nine former Africa Prize alumni from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, and Cameroon.
The medal is accompanied by over a million rand (UK £50,000) to bolster his business, Technovera. This company produces Pelebox Smart Lockers, designed to enhance access to medication for chronic illnesses, including tuberculosis and HIV.
The two runners-up for the medal were Aisha Raheem, with Farmz2u from Nigeria, a venture that enhances efficiency for stakeholders in the food system through seamless operational systems, and Samuel Njiguna with Chura Limited from Kenya, which offers a web-based, multinetwork system.
This system enables users to transfer airtime between their various SIMs irrespective of the carrier, purchase airtime from service providers that can be utilized on any network, send airtime to family members or employees, or convert airtime into cash. Both runners-up were awarded £15,000 to further refine their innovations.
