Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has expressed approval of police investigations into the death of a first-year student at Aburi Girls Senior High School (SHS).
The student tragically lost her life after allegedly being refused medical care by the school nurse, who reportedly accused her of consistently pretending to be ill.
The student, named Stacey Okyere, who had been suffering from intense stomach pains, sadly passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024.
Reports indicate that she was hurriedly taken to the hospital, but tragically, she was already deceased upon arrival.
The incident, which transpired under mysterious circumstances, has led to severe criticism of the school’s management, with the family describing the situation as neglect on the part of the administration.
In a statement sympathizing with the family of the student issued on Monday, Eduwatch said it was not the first time such an unfortunate incident had occurred.
It therefore urged the police to pursue the investigations to their full conclusion and make the findings public.
“We welcome the investigation launched by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service into the incident and urge that the matter be pursued to its full conclusion, with findings made public.”
“Worryingly, the unfortunate event at Aburi Girls SHS is not the first. Since 2017, there have been at least four (4) widely reported deaths in secondary schools resulting from the wrongful exercise of discretion by school authorities in refusing to allow sick students to either seek treatment at home or send them to hospitals for treatment,” stated.
